Welcome to Steel Guitar Wizard. A web site dedicated to the art of playing the steel guitar.
Our intent is to teach primarily by providing video instruction, presented by world class steel players in the art of playing the steel guitar. In addition we’ll be adding articles and useful information to help you learn and expand your knowledge about this great instrument.
The main focus of this site will be the non-pedal steel guitar. Invented in Hawaii in about 1880, the steel guitar traveled around the world and has influenced not only musicians of all kinds on every continent, but also manufacturers, craftsmen and inventors as well. Often simply called a lap steel, it’s is also referred to as playing ‘Hawaiian Style’. The guitar is either laid on the lap, or held horizontal to the ground by a strap or mounted on legs, and a smooth round bar is used to fret the note on the strings. Most often the bar is made of polished steel – thus the name ‘steel guitar’.
The pedal steel guitar is similar, and evolved directly from the Hawaiian Steel by way of many creative musicians and inventors in the mid 1900′s. And it is one of only a handful of musical instruments invented in the United States. It is played ‘Hawaiian style’ with a bar, but also has pedals to stretch an slacken the strings to pre-defined pitches. Everyone has their preference for the type of steel guitar they enjoy playing – but the essence of steel can be found in a simple 6 string guitar. So that’s where we’ll start.
Many popular genres of music employing the steel guitar will be presented. We’ll present information on 6 and 8 string electric styles, as well as acoustic steel and ”resophonic” guitar (aka ‘Dobro’ TM). As we grow we’ll have steel instruction for Western Swing, Blues, Hawaiian, Jazz, Gospel and Bluegrass.
The non-pedal steel can be a simple 6 string acoustic guitar with the strings raised at the nut, or a multi-neck instrument with 2,3 or even 4 necks of 8 strings or more that is mounted on legs to allow you to stand up and play, or enjoy sitting comfortably at the guitar. Whatever type of guitar you want to play is fine, and we’ll help you master it.
